Bella had plenty of news.

“Look at all these newspaper clippings. Eunida was a star reporter! People have been finding her clippings all over Redbud. And beyond. Look at this!”

Then Bella stopped talking, noticing the expressions on the two faces.

“What?”

Judy told her about Lois.

“Lois is missing!?” Bella squeaked out her alarm and nearly dropped the two plates in her hands – two vegetable omelets with piles of hash browns.

Bella recovered in time to set the two plates safely on the table. Then she sat down. Chief Sorensen asked her about Eunida Heppelwhite. “What kind of mood is she in today? I may need to talk to her again later.”

“Something’s bothering her. Maybe it’s just the tornado damage to her house and needing to live here in one room.” She brightened. “But she’s not really in what I’d call a bad mood. In fact, she’s almost pleasant to be around.”

Judy shushed Bella and bent her head as if pointing across the room. Eunida Heppelwhite was heading their way without the help of her walker.

“She almost has a spring in her step,” said Judy.

After Chief Sorensen pulled out the chair next to him, Eunida sat down, thanked him and smiled, yes smiled, at him. “I’ve been thinking all night about that skeleton and what might have happened so long ago.”

“And?”

Eunida tapped her fingers on the table.

“Several handsome young fellows were living out there. They were tearing down walls, updating the plumbing and the electricity, painting, replacing windows. Working for their rent, so to speak. I knew a few of them. I’d come home a couple weeks before the wedding that never took place. I didn’t have much to do, so I showed up anywhere I heard there might be a party. I knew how to have a good time back then.”

Chief Sorensen considered her remarks, but knew she wasn’t answering any of his important questions. He tried for more. “But do you remember something that might be important? Something that might lead us to the truth?”

“Maybe, but I only know part of the story. I need to talk to someone I think can help me piece it together.” She spoke slowly, cautiously.

The chief slapped an exasperated hand on the table.

“Just spill it, Eunida. I don’t care if you don’t know everything. Just tell me what you do know.”

“Not yet, young fella. Not yet.” Eunida huffed indignantly.

Judy couldn’t help laughing. “When was the last time someone called you a young fella?”

Chief Sorensen forked up the last of his omelet and looked at Judy.

“We need to get moving.”

And to a startled Eunida, he shook a finger. “Someone who’s been very nice to you may be in danger, and it’s probably all because of that damn skeleton and whatever happened out there that somebody doesn’t want me or anyone else to know about.”

He stomped out of the café with Judy hurrying in pursuit.

Bella watched them leave, then turned back to Eunida.

“I’m thinking of visiting Audrey later on.”

“Maybe I’ll go with you.”

Bella couldn’t believe what she heard coming out of the mouth of Eunida Heppelwhite.
